Resolution Calling for a Moratorium on New Data Center Development Until Reasonable Regulations and Protections Are Established
"Slow down, you move too fast! You gotta make the mornin' last."
WHEREAS, Michigan communities are facing a rapid increase in proposed data center developments that raise serious concerns related to excessive energy use, water consumption, land use, and strain on local infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, data centers are among the most electricity-intensive facilities in the economy, increasing demand on the electrical grid and raising the utility rates for residential customers, seniors, tribal communities, small businesses, and working families; and
WHEREAS, Michigan currently lacks sufficient, enforceable regulations to ensure that new data center developments protect ratepayers, safeguard water resources, and secure meaningful community consent; and
WHEREAS, residents and local governments have raised concerns about limited transparency, insufficient local control, and inadequate public input in decisions regarding large-scale data center siting and approval; and
WHEREAS, responsible economic development requires clear standards, public accountability, and protections that are in place before new development is approved;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Washtenaw County Republican Party (WCGOP), by and through the Executive Committee, calls for a moratorium on the approval of new data center development in the State of Michigan until reasonable, enforceable regulations and protections are established; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the WCGOP affirms that Michigan taxpayers and ratepayers should not be required to subsidize corporate development that increases utility costs, strains public resources, and fails to deliver proportional public benefit.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the WCGOP calls upon the District 6 Republican Committee to adopt this resolution.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be forwarded to the Michigan Republican Party with the recommendation for its acceptance and placement in the appropriate document or with the appropriate committee for action.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that this position of the WCGOP will remain in effect until such time it is replaced or repealed.
Adopted by unanimous vote at the meeting of the WCGOP held on March 12,2026.
