Ol' Gretch promised to fix the roads, but did little to nothing.
A Letter From House Speaker Matt Hall
This is How You Fix the Roads
Hello,
For years, politicians in Lansing promised to fix Michigan’s crumbling roads but never followed through. Year after year, families were told to pay more and accept excuses instead of solutions. I made it my mission to change that.
Under my leadership, House Republicans delivered a real, $3.4B roads plan: one that fixes our infrastructure, focuses on local road repairs, protects taxpayers, and does not raise taxes.
When we came into the majority, our roads faced decades of neglect. Drivers paid the price with blown tires, busted suspensions, and endless repair bills. Too many Lansing politicians had grown comfortable with inaction; some even said the only way forward was to hike taxes yet again! I refused to accept that.
Instead, we reexamined priorities and found a way to fund roads responsibly. We cut waste, fraud, and abuse, and ensured that every penny paid in taxes at the gas pump actually went to fix Michigan’s roads and bridges. We proved that you can govern responsibly and deliver solutions without asking working families to dig deeper into their pockets.

Unfortunately, while House Republicans have acted, Senate Democrats have refused to work with us. They haven’t even proposed a plan for fixing the roads.
With the state’s budget deadline approaching, the lack of progress risks putting Michigan families and our economy in a difficult position. We need steady, responsible leadership to deliver a budget on time. That’s what the people of Michigan expect and deserve.
The difference is clear. House Republicans passed a balanced budget that cuts waste, fixes local roads, and delivers tax relief. The Senate has not yet taken up these solutions, and Michigan families are waiting for action.
I made a promise to Michigan families that we would fix the roads without raising taxes, and I kept that promise. Now, we believe Senate Democrats need to stop playing games and join us in putting Michigan first. Drivers across this state are counting on us, and I will continue to fight every day to ensure Lansing delivers the results they deserve.
Thank you for standing with us,

Matt Hall
Speaker of the House
